Consultation: Medical Curriculum in Perioperative Care

Public Consultation

20 September 2024 - 1 November 2024

As part of the Centre for Perioperative Care (CPOC) strategy, CPOC is dedicated to educating and developing the workforce. Delivering quality perioperative care requires a workforce equipped to manage patients in different healthcare settings and those undergoing all types of surgery from minor to complex procedures. CPOC recognises the need for better use of the entire workforce through broader training, cross-skilling and a more flexible approach.

Background

In October 2020 the CPOC Board approved a proposal to develop a medical fellowship in perioperative care for medical specialists, in order to help meet the significant demand on surgical services in managing complex patients across their perioperative journey.

CPOC have been commissioned to undertake this work by Health Education England (HEE), now NHS England following a merge in February 2023.

Why is this needed?

The medical curriculum is intended to be available to would-be and post CCT, CCST or CESR medical professionals, to be relevant to UK practice and can be adopted by specialists from various medical disciplines.

The purpose of the curriculum is to describe the knowledge, skills and behaviours required for senior doctors to manage and enable the holistic care of a patient preparing for and recovering from surgery. The intention is that doctors from multiple medical disciplines will be able to participate in the Fellowship programme in order to develop expertise in leading perioperative care teams.

FAQs

The scope of this project is to develop the content for a medical curriculum in perioperative care. Once submitted, CPOC will work with NHS England  to agree phase 2 of developing the assessment and implementation strategy

This fellowship allows access to training to holders or would-be holders of a CCT, CCST or CESR in medical specialties involving perioperative care

The medical draft has been split into two parts.

Part 1 is the curriculum specification. This includes the purpose, scope, eligibility etc.

Part 2 is the curriculum. This includes professional capabilities, training outcomes etc.

We would like feedback on both Part 1 and Part 2

CPOC was commissioned by NHS England to develop a Medical Curriculum in perioperative care (which is currently out for consultation), as well as a Multiprofessional Capability Framework in perioperative care. The intention of the Multiprofessional Capability Framework is for practitioners from registered professional backgrounds to develop expertise in leading perioperative care teams.

However, the Multiprofessional Capability Framework project has been paused  by NHS England and CPOC is awaiting feedback from NHS England as to what the next steps will be.
