RCoA/CPOC Podcast: Patient Safety in Perioperative Practice Prize Winner 2025

In this joint Royal College of Anaesthetists Anaesthesia on Air and Centre for Perioperative Care podcast, listen to CPOC Director, Dr David Selwyn, former CPOC Fellow Ms Claire Frank and the winner of the Patient Safety in Perioperative Practice (PSPP) conference prize Dr Hattie White.
Hattie is a CT4 in Anaesthetics and the work was developed in conjuction with Dr J Foley a CT1 in Anaesthetics and Dr Michael Bretland, Consultant Anaesthetist, all Princess of Wales Hospital, Bridgend.
The podcast discusses the winning submission 'Improving Clinical Incident Reporting in a District General Hospital Anaesthetic Department' and Hattie’s QI work, how she came up with the idea, the challenges and her contributions to perioperative care as a result. We hope this will be of interest to listeners who are thinking about embarking upon their own QI project.
Hattie White is a CT4 ACCS Anaesthetics Trainee currently working in Princess of Wales Hospital, Bridgend. She graduated from Cardiff University in 2018 and has worked in both Wales and the North West of England during her training so far. She has developed clinical interests in Education and Patient Safety and has enjoyed building on these throughout her core training.

Dr David Selwyn is a Consultant anaesthetist and the acting Chief Executive of Sherwood Forest Hospitals. As the director of CPOC 2019-2026, Dr Selwyn is also a co-opted member of the RCoA council.

Claire Frank is a preoperative assessment pharmacist based in North Wales and CPOC Fellow 2024-2025. Claire is responsible for leading the CPOC Prepared for Surgery, Ready for Recovery: Supporting Patients from Pre-op to Discharge Guidance. Claire is also the joint lead of the guidance development team for the United Kingdom Clinical Pharmacy Association (UKCPA) Handbook of Perioperative Medicines.
