Southwest and Thames Valley & Wessex Paediatric Pre-Assessment Practitioner course

Following the successful local delivery of the Southwest and Thames Valley & Wessex Paediatric Pre-Assessment Practitioner course in 2022, there has been further national roll out of the course and it is now available in all regions across England with all areas having delivered at least one course in 2024. There has been interest expressed from all UK nations with learners attending from Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland.

The course is signposted via The Preoperative Association and APAGBI websites and is open to applicants who are registered healthcare professionals including paediatric nurses, adult nurses and ODPs.

This time last year, 85 healthcare professionals had attended the course. A year later, since the national rollout, that number is now up to 231 healthcare professionals of which 228 are registered nurses (both adult and paediatric) and 3 are registered ODPs.

There is robust evaluation of the course using the Kirkpatrick Model which allows the learner to self-evaluate pre and post-course competency using Benner’s ‘Novice to Expert’ stages of proficiency. An example of progress scores achieved in SW and TV&W regions is shown below. Next year we hope to be able to update you on the course’s impact from a national perspective.
